Professional Statement
Dr. Sandberg is a Board Certified ophthalmologist, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a Voluntary Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine.
Dr. Sandberg was born in New York City. He received his B.A. degree Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University, and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He completed his medical internship at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Sandberg served two years in the United States Public Health Service doing cancer research at the NIH, then spent a year in Israel establishing a cancer chemotherapy program at Tel Hashomer Hospital. He completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and has remained active on the voluntary faculty.
Dr. Sandberg has served as President of the Miami Ophthalmologic Society and as Chairman of the Dept. of Ophthalmology of Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital. He also served on the executive committee of the Florida Society of Ophthalmology and on the board of directors of the Memorial Same Day Surgery Center.
Dr. Sandberg has volunteered for surgical missions to third world countries to train local ophthalmologists in cataract and oculoplastic surgery. He has a particular interest in oculoplastic surgery (functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, ptosis, ectropion, entropion, blocked tear ducts). He has lectured to physicians and community groups, published scientific articles, and participated in research studies on oculoplastic surgery, cataract and intraocular lens surgery, lasers, glaucoma, and the latest treatments for diabetic retinopathy and macula degeneration.
